ComicRack, eComic reader and library management

First, let me disclaim that I do not read comics, nor manga, and I'm not a huge fan of anime. In fact, the only drawn-art medium that I really like is hentai. But enough about me! Today I've had the pleasure of using ComicRack, an eComics reader and manager.

I don't have anything to compare it to, but according to my friends it's the best comic reader out there. I can't really tell you if it'll make your comics more exciting or enjoyable, but I can tell you that it's a joy to use. Just drag an archive of images into ComicRack, and off you go! It supports every popular archive format -- ZIP (CBZ), RAR (CBR), TAR (CBT), 7Z (CB7) -- and even PDFs, with a little hackery. If you prefer a more organized approach (and I'm pretty sure most comic collectors like to keep things organized), you can create a folder for each genre, or each series, or whatever tentacles tickles your fancy!

Once you've imported a few archives, it's time to read some comics. ComicRack's reader is truly lovely. You can view comics inside the main 'library' view, but really you want to use the full-screen viewer. Then it's just a matter of sitting back, scrolling your mouse wheel, and reading. There's a particularly nice page transition, too.

Best of all, ComicRack is free to download, has an active forum community -- and there are even add-ons!

Quo's latest Mac clone to feature Asetek liquid cooling, Core i7

We just got off the phone with Quo Computers founder Rashantha De Silva. Remember him? Last spring, amidst all the hoopla surrounding Psystar and Apple, he announced the opening of a walk-in Mac clone shop in The Golden State. Since then, Psystar may have bitten the dust, but it looks like De Silva and co. are still in business... for now, anyway. Their newest (they haven't even had time to update the website), the Quo maxQ2, will feature an Intel Core i7 3.6GHz CPU, 12GB of RAM, a 240GB SSD, a 1TB HDD, and an Adobe Mercury Playback Engine-compatible NVIDIA 285 GTX GPU. In addition, this bad boy will come equipped with an Asetek liquid / copper cold plate cooling system, and believe it or not, it'll run OS X, Linux and Windows 7. Prices start at $3,765, and it should go on sale starting September 15. For about 18 minutes, or an hour and 18 minutes if Apple's lawyer crew just so happens to be at lunch.

[Thanks, John Mayer (really!)]Continue reading Quo's latest Mac clone to feature Asetek liquid cooling, Core i7Quo's latest Mac clone to feature Asetek liquid cooling, Core i7 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 16:18:00 EDT. Dell to drop preinstalled Windows XP option this month

Back in June, Microsoft announced that OEMs would need to begin the final move away from Windows XP. The drop-dead date from Redmond was October 22, 2010 -- which is now fast approaching. It should come as no surprise, then, that Dell issued a statement yesterday saying that XP Home and Pro will no longer be offered as a factory preinstall option by the end of this month.

The Dell post offers several suggestions for those who may still not be ready for the change, from Virtual XP mode in Windows 7 to utilizing Dell's Custom Factory Install (CFI). But just because XP preinstalls can't be purchased, it doesn't mean you're stuck migrating to Windows 7.

You can, of course, install using your own media -- or Dell could even provide an XP rollback image on DVD. That's still fairly common with OEMs, and in the past couple of months, I've used such discs from Acer, Lenovo, and Toshiba on laptops that shipped with Windows 7 Professional.

XP still has far too many fans for the world's #2 PC OEM to drop the OS completely.

Microsoft ending support for SteadyState

SteadyState is one of my favorite free utilities from Microsoft, and it was one of the first apps I ever wrote about here at Download Squad. Now, however, it appears as though the sun is setting on SteadyState: Microsoft has announced that support will be ending on June 30th, 2011.

That, of course, simply means that actual support for SteadyState will come to an end -- don't expect to get answers to your inquiries or receive updates. InfoWorld sort of pulls the panic button in their post, suggesting that organizations currently using SteadyState who need support look to Faronics' DeepFreeze or HDGUARD at about $40 per PC, but I'm not sure why. SteadyState won't cease to function on June 30th -- it's just the end of official support.

That's not a major problem in my book. SteadyState just works, and it's incredibly simple to use. There's a help file built in and plenty of resources on the Web which can assist, so if you're using SteadyState now to, say, lock down computers in your library -- keep on using it.

The only real bad news here is that this means there will definitely never be a version of SteadyState which supports x64 systems. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that Microsoft is looking to incorporate the code into another app -- say Live Family Safety or Security Essentials. Either one would be a good match, and they both carry the same price tag.

The official Microsoft download for SteadyState will only be available until December 31st of this year, so grab it and file it away somewhere.Microsoft ending support for SteadyState originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 08:30:00 EST. Super Angel v. VC SMACKDOWN Part 2: Are Super Angels Just a Phase? (TCTV)

So let me get this straight, you call yourself an angel, but you're investing limited partners' money...doesn't that just make you a small, early-stage VC? And if you're successful, don't you just raise a bigger fund and hire more partners, looking a lot more like an early stage VC?

In day two of our David v. David/ Super Angel v. VC SMACKDOWN, even Dave McClure admits "Super Angel" is a flawed term. But he insists there's still a difference between what he does and what David Hornik does as a partner for August Capital. And, he insists it's a better way to make money and the future of investing in the consumer Internet.

We also tackle the thorny topic of "value add." Can an investor who doesn't have operating experience really add value to a startup, and is "worked at Google" or "worked at PayPal" equal operating experience to starting, running and exiting a successful company? In old days, angels were known for deeply mentoring their portfolio companies, but how do you mentor when you're investing in 500 startups?

Norton's best idea ever: Hack is Wack! contest, featuring Snoop Dogg

You know, if there's one genre of music I think of when I'm pondering issues related to cyber-security, it's rap. And if there's one rapper I think of when I'm in the mood for lyrics which don't mention any kind of illegal activities, it's Snoop Dogg.

Yes, those are two of the most ridiculous sentences I've ever written at Download Squad, but whatcha gonna do? This isn't a situation I ever expected to encounter. Behold, the Hack is Wack! contest to raise cyber-crime awareness!

The contest, of course, is based on the old geek hit "Don't Copy That Floppy," the early 90's hit sponsored by the fine folks at the Software Publisher's Association. Hack is Wack! is different, of course. Hey, it's 2010 now, and contests like this are crowdsourced -- so take off your shirt, pull your pants down below your waistline, and get ready to drop some plates.

First prize is a Toshiba laptop and tickets to a Snoop show -- where you get to meet (wait for it) his management team and agent. Yeah. Fo'shizzle. Now on to their choice for spokesperson...

I love you, Snoop, but as much as I enjoy listening to you refer to yourself as the d-o-double-g, you seem like an odd fit for this project. Your rap sheet, after all, makes it appear like this could be some kind of nutty judge's idea of community service.

At any rate, someone please inform Paul Barman of this contest and make sure he enters immediately.

Chrome extensions with right-click context menus coming soon! And your chance to win a Chrome hoodie...

Filed under: Developer, Google, BrowsersIn a move that is surely an effort to keep pace with Firefox's helter-skelter development of Jetpack, Chrome Beta now has a context menu API!

There's also a bunch of other new APIs, the most exciting being the Omnibox API. Imagine Chrome's built-in search engines (type 'Amazon', then a space, and then a book name -- it searches Amazon!), but with extension access. Type the name of an extension into the Omnibox, and then any further input is redirected to the extension. Actually, having said this is an exciting addition, I'm really not sure what an extension would do with it... Perhaps something Ubiquity-esque?

The new Infobar API might be of interest, too. You know that blue bar that appears when Chrome asks you whether you want a page to be translated? Well, extensions can now pop those up for you. I can see security and privacy extensions like LastPass making use of them, or an extension that alerts you when a page you're visiting has an 'official Chrome extension' (you know, instead of that awful JavaScript hack...).

Oh, and if you make an extension (featuring the new APIs? It's not clear), let Google know and they might send you a free Chrome hoodie! Sony shows off Google TV (or a video of it, anyway) at IFA 2010

It's not the full-on demo you're probably hoping for, but Sony devoted a section of its sprawling, city-within-a-city of a booth at IFA 2010 to diving into some of the capabilities its Google TV-enabled televisions will be offering when they launch in the US before the end of the year. The two-plus minute video loop runs through web search, Google Maps (which looks pretty awesome, we have to admit), YouTube and Picasa functionality, app favorites, and picture-in-picture, which means you don't have to miss those first few precious minutes of Iron Chef America while you look up desserts that use eggplant. Interestingly, we stopped by Logitech's booth today, who insisted there wasn't a Revue anywhere near the show -- despite the fact that beta units are in the field, the launch is coming up, and these guys are probably all looking to strike content deals with European providers right about now. In other words, we've got a sneaking suspicion there are Revues (and fully-functional Google TV sets from Sony) on the premises, they're just locked away in meetings where our press badges are... shall we say, "frowned upon." Follow the break for the full video.

Windows Phone 7 goes RTM

Filed under: OS Updates, Windows Mobile
Sure, Apple's been stealing most of the blog headlines this afternoon, but Microsoft has some pretty big news of their own. Today, Windows Phone 7 was officially released to manufacturing -- and the boys in Redmond are pretty stoked about it.

Microsoft's Terry Myerson certainly sounds pumped in the official blog post. "We've had thousands of independent software vendors and early adopters testing our software and giving us great feedback. We are ready."

As the Engadget crew points out, devices are unquestionably on their way -- but we're more interested in seeing some kick-butt apps and games... New official MeeGo screenshots show promise, influence

MeeGo's official user interface guidelines could easily end up determining whether the platform sinks or swims -- no one wants a phone whose UI looks like junk, after all. The minions at Nokia and Intel's little pet project have posted new OS shots as examples of how to properly implement the interface in third-party apps, and we've got to admit -- things are looking a lot cleaner, prettier, and generally more modern than the first round of pictures we saw back in June, thanks in part to a demonstration of the platform's comprehensive theming capability that can totally revamp how UI elements look. We're definitely seeing shades of webOS in the task switcher (pictured above), but then again, Nokia's no stranger to borrowing ideas it likes. That's all well and good as long as it makes for a great platform... and obviously, we'd need some hardware to do that. Video Impressions Of Google TV On Logitech Revue Hardware

It seems that one of the beta testers for Google TV couldn't keep all that goodness to himself, and has posted several pictures and some video of the near-finished interface and hardware. It's a brief and not particularly shocking video, but seeing it running on a home TV and hearing a regular guy expressing legitimate (if subdued) excitement make it a lot more real.

While winding down from Wednesday’s iPod announcements, Apple CEO Steve Jobs appears to have taken some time to respond to an e-mail criticizing the new look of the iTunes icon.

Toshiba Folio 100 Hands-On

We took a gander at Toshiba's Folio 100 today and here's the main takeaway: sucker be huge. It has a 10.1" screen and a fairly reasonable bezel around it - though the resolution on that screen is still only 1024x600, same as the 7" Galaxy Tab. The whole thing is hard plastic with a small texture to the back and felt fine despite being what we suspect is still pre-production hardware. It weighs in at 1.7 pounds and is carry-able, sure, but it's such a large, wide screen that this is pretty much a sit-down device only. The battery died on us pretty quickly - at 1020mAh it's probably difficult to get through an entire day of IFA fondling. Toshiba claims 7 hours of battery life.  The HDMI-out and USB-host (yay!) ports are hidden underneath a port cover. There's 16gigs on board and it's expandable via a standard, large SD card slot. Combine that full-sized SD card slot, the USB Host port, and the HDMI-out and we're thinking this is a business-focused device that has aspirations of being a professional photographer's bestest friend ever. We were looking at at build of Android 2.2 that didn't look quite optimized for the big screen and definitely isn't final build ("TOSHIBA_FOLIO_AND_A 2.2 3.0004 for IFA test-keys" is a pretty good hint there), but we did find it to be responsive and quick - for the most part. There was the occasional lag and jaggy transition, due to that early build moreso than the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, which should be the definition of fast. We would definitely like to see the final build on this - we bet that the included Opera Mobile browser will simply fly. $540 in "late October" for the WiFi only version is what they quoted us in the booth, with the 3G version coming next year. Catch more photos after the break!

Windows Phone 7 Could Bring a New Look to the Smartphone Show

Microsoft has released the code for its latest mobile operating system to manufacturers. That means U.S. consumers should be able to purchase smartphones running Windows Phone 7 during the upcoming holiday shopping season, while European consumers could have those new devices in their hands as early as next month. The question now is how many consumers actually will want a new Windows-based smartphone?
